Update of field activities in brief

Currently I am in Tanzania working with Alex Bashungwa to assess the viability of starting the SWC management guidelines here. Today I will be meeting with the minister of natural resources and a UNIDO rep. Annette Scott and UN habitat rep. to share my management guidelines. Hopefully the government and the UN will be interested in doing several pilot project. I also plan to do some research witht he forestry department and NGO's starting tree planting initiatives here in Tanzania.

In the Aberdare range a bongo hide is currently being erected under my supervision where a trap camera took multiple photographs of a herd of bongo resident in the area.

In the next few weeks I will have a full financial breakdown of the Taita SWC to date.

The Rhino Ark Org. Has agreed to take on my project and to do several pilot projects around the gates leading into the park. The RA will facilitate the extension work.

The Danish government development organization DANIDA will also hopefully take on the running of 10 pilot projects in different areas in Kenya.

One serious issue that I had run into was the corruption involved with counting the trees during extension work. But now I propose that each farmer counts his/hers neighbor's trees and he too counts his/her neighbor's trees. Then if there is any mistake in the count then neither of the farmers will get the loan.

A full report of my terms activities will be posted before week 8.

Overall the projects and the planned operation of SWC management guidelines have been very well received by farmers, NGOs, and government officials.
